Mary Whyte has completed 50 works for a future museum exhibition entitled, "WORKING SOUTH" - a series of portraits of southern American workers in vanishing industries. This work reveals an intimate portrayal of the lives of an America that is disappearing.

Mary Whyte captures the essence of character in her exhibit of new figurative works titled, "Facing Out". While Whyte's quintessential watercolor style continues to celebrate the African-Americans of Johns Island, South Carolina, there is an expanded focus to the artist's work in, "Facing Out".

Coleman Fine Art will host four of the country’s leading artists for the Eighth Annual plein air paint out in Charleston, SC, WET PAINT – March 24th- 27th, 2011. This year’s WET PAINT will offer Oil, Water, and Pastel. Our featured artists will include two artists working in oil paint: Gregory Packard and Kevin Macpherson; one artist, Marc R. Hanson, working in pastel, and artist, Mary Whyte, working in watercolor. The artists will paint different locations in and around the Charleston area. Typical locations might include, Lower Church Street, Shem Creek, Magnolia Gardens, Folly Beach, or Johns Island. Call the gallery to confirm the day’s locations. Please join us as we conclude the weeks work with a reception for the artists, and an opportunity to view the paintings on Friday, March 25th, 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Coleman Fine Art. The reception is free and open to the public. Saturday morning, March 26th, at 11:00 am the public is invited to join the artists as they lead a personal walk-through of the exhibition. Anne Cimballa, an art teacher for grades 7, 9, and 10 at the Charleston County School of the Arts received the 2010 Mary Whyte Art Educator Award and the $1,000 cash prize that accompanies the award. Established in 2007, the Mary Whyte Art Educator Award is designed to recognize a high school visual art teacher in the tri-county area who has demonstrated superior commitment to his or her students and craft. Ms. Cimballa submitted the lesson plan “Palette Knife Painting,” inspired by the Works of Brian Rutenberg. Students visited the Gibbes exhibition Brian Rutenberg: Tidesong and created original landscape paintings using their own photos of the Lowcountry while painting with palette knives in the style of Rutenberg. Introduction to Water Gilding Date: November 10 - 13, 2010 (9am-4pm) Location: Coleman Fine Art, 79 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401 Short Description: A four-day hands-on course designed to familiarize the student with the centuries-old craft of water gilding. Fundamental procedures for water gilding will be reviewed and recipes will be discussed. Each student will create a 9 x12 inch frame to gesso, sand, water gild, and tone. Emphasis will be on creating a period frame with a 17th century Italian finish. All materials will be provided and included in the cost of the course.
