A Summer Art and Wine Auction – South Coast Herald


In response to collectors’ interest in smaller thematic auctions, Strauss & Co will be hosting four curated art auctions, all scheduled in the evening. These include a special sculpture sale focusing on Josephine Ghesa and Job Kekana and an individual artist sale of market fresh works from the estate of the late Robert Hodgins. This auction is the first-ever event of its kind dedicated entirely to the much-loved artist, teacher and critic Robert Hodgins.

Irma Stern’s remarkable portrait of an urbanized sitter, African woman (estimate R5 – 6 million), painted in 1940, is part of an impressive batch of oils and ceramics by this blue chip artist. Leading the selection of two dozen collectible works on paper by William Kentridge is a process drawing from his 2011 animated film Other faces (estimate 3-4 million). Strauss & Co is pleased to be able to offer the woodcut Mantegna (estimated at R800 000 – 1.2 million), another edition of which is currently featured in the survey at Kentridge’s Royal Academy in London. In addition to major works by Walter Battiss, Dumile Feni, John Meyer, Alexis Preller JH Pierneef and Andrew Verster, the catalog includes works by international artists Marina Abramović and Yinka Shonibare.

“Recent success in the market with our single artist sales and in-session artist focuses, coupled with a post-pandemic return to normalcy, has prompted us to renew our November program,” says Alastair Meredith, Head of Art at Strauss & Co. “The curated presentation Our four auctions are designed to offer collectors generous insights into important artists, both historical and contemporary – from modernist woodcarver Job Kekana and post-war painter Sydney Goldblatt to Robert Hodgins, whose diverse body of work and influence is explored in a special sale”.

Strauss & Co’s Johannesburg art and wine sales season begins on Thursday 3 November 2022 with a 100-lot catalog of modern, post-war and contemporary art. Notable painters include Keith Alexander, Gregoire Boonzaier, Adolph Jentsch, Walter Meyer, John Mohl, Ndikhumbule Ngqinambi, Frans Oerder, and Larry Scully. The lot compilation includes collector’s focuses on Walter Battiss, Sydney Golblatt and François Krige.

After the wine sale by Strauss & Co the day before, IN/FORM: Exploring South African Sculpture (Monday, November 7, 2022) includes seven wood carvings by Job Kekana. The selection of figurative pieces reflects Kekana’s secular and religious interests as an artist. Ardmore-trained Josephine Ghesa, one of the highlights of the Norval Foundation’s recent survey of black women artists, When rain clouds come upShe has three specimens of her zoomorphic figures for sale. Other notable sculptors include Frances Goodman, Sydney Kumalo, Ezrom Legae, Dylan Lewis, Henry Moore, Walter Oltmann, Edoardo Villa, and Anton van Wouw.

Three site-specific commissions by Walter Battiss, Irma Stern and Andrew Verster are part of a vibrant medley of quality works on offer on Tuesday 8th November 2022. Originally created for a two storey modernist home in Kimberley, Battiss’ Spirit of Africa (estimate R3 – 4 million) is a dizzying depiction of African figures against an abstract background. At over 6 meters long, Verster’s multi-panel floral mural (estimate R400,000 – R600,000) was originally displayed in the upstairs dining room of the late Judge Alan and Brenda Magid in Berea, Durban.

Strauss & Co’s summer sale ends with the Three Robs: Artist, Collaborator, Friend (Wednesday 9 November 2022), an individual artist sale of oils, watercolours, monotypes, pastels and drawings by Robert Hodgins. The sale also includes works Hodgins has created in collaboration with artists Sarah Ballam, Deborah Bell, Kendell Geers, William Kentridge, Jan Neethling and Sam Nhlengethwa. Wilhelm van Rensburg, Senior Art Specialist and Head Curator, Strauss & Co, who organized the auction, will lead a live talk and video premiere on Tuesday 18 October 2022 at 6pm.

In the run-up to the summer auction, Strauss & Co will be presenting a comprehensive educational and supporting program. A preview exhibition will open to the public on October 18, 2022 and will run until November 3. Experts from Strauss & Co offer tours on October 28th and 29th and on November 5th and 6th.
