Antiques and modern works of art in the auction preview

A collection of antiques ranging from china, jade and old books to coins and ink paintings, as well as a range of modern and contemporary art from Holly’s fall Beijing auction, will be on display in Shanghai Thursday through Sunday.

One of the highlights is a work trio by Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), one of the most famous and amazing Chinese artists of the 20th century.

Born into a family of artists in Neijiang, Sichuan Province, Zhang studied textile dyeing in Kyoto, Japan. From 1941 to 1944 he went to Dunhuang in Gansu Province to make replicas of paintings in the Mogao Caves.

After a successful career in Shanghai, he left mainland China in 1949. His productive career spanned Argentina, Brazil, and the United States.

Another highlight is the canvas and plank oil painting by Sanyu (1895-1966), a Sino-French painter who is now recognized as a master in the West.

The Sanyu family, born in Sichuan Province, owned one of the largest silk weaving mills in the country at the time. After studying in Shanghai, he visited Japan in 1919 and later France, where he decided to live.

As one of the first generation of Chinese artists to go to France, Sanyu immersed itself in French culture. His life was marked by ups and downs, and the former Chinese “playboy” was later a poor artist. When he died in 1966, only a handful of Parisian collectors knew him.

The preview of Holly’s Beijing auction coincides with the opening auction in Shanghai from Wednesday to Friday, which will focus on contemporary art by young domestic and international artists.

Unlike other Chinese contemporary art auctions, Holly’s Shanghai auction has a larger percentage of young western artists, including Jonas Burge, Jonas Wood, Flora Yukhnoivh, and Jigger Cruz.
