Artists decorate Windermere with pieces after receiving Keir Starmer’s award

WINDERMERE Fine Art Gallery launched a new exhibition at the end of the year featuring works by some of the best British artists.

These include the latest winners of the prestigious Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ acclaimed annual exhibition, one of the highest honors in British art. Among the prominent guests at the awards ceremony were opposition leader Keir Starmer as well as host Tim Benson, President of the ROI, and Vice President Adebanji Alade.

Artists – now on view in the Windermere Fine Art Gallery – came from the illustrious painting group “Northern Boys”, which exhibited at the annual exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in the Mall Galleries in London.

The gallery also exhibits work by ROI member Amanda Coleman, who won the ROI’s Alan Gourley Memorial Award this year.

Owner Matthew Titherington said, “We are excited to be bringing the award-winning work of all these nationally recognized artists to the Windermere Fine Art Gallery for a special year-end exhibition that will run throughout the holidays.”

He and his wife Dawn took over the gallery earlier this year to attract more art buyers and London-based collectors to the Lake District for weekends and short breaks.

He added, “We have an exhibition of new artwork from all these artists bringing fresh and amazing artwork to Windermere.

“By talking to the artists and visiting ROI exhibitions, we ensure that we are showcasing some of the best oil painters in the country.”

The new exhibition completes a milestone year for the new gallery owners and builds on the success of summer and fall exhibitions showing work by leading national artists such as Haidee-Jo Summers in the Lake District during the pandemic.

The new works are part of the gallery’s larger 2021 Winter Exhibition, an ever-changing and updated exhibition that runs through January and features original artworks such as landscape paintings, still lifes, abstract art, figurative paintings, and chandeliers.

Curator and artist Steve Smith stated that the paintings have been specially chosen and depict a variety of subjects and locations from places such as Spain (Seville, Santa Ponsa), Italy (Venice), Scotland, London, Cumbria, Yorkshire (Settle), Ainsdale Sands , Manchester, Blackpool and the Lake District.

The gallery is an advocate of en plein air painting by the respected group known as the Northern Boys, whose work is often featured in the best London galleries. The new exhibition is part of a plan to compete with major city galleries and make the Lake District a widely recognized northern hub for high quality visual and contemporary art.

The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, founded in 1882, is the only major British art society that promotes and exhibits works of the highest quality exclusively in oil painting. It offers a competence and encouragement center to all those who love this robust medium and is located in the Mall Galleries in London. The ROI Annual Open Exhibition takes place in November or December each year when non-members have the opportunity to exhibit alongside established ROI members.
