Bay Co. Parks and Rec gets painting robots

BAY COUNTY Florida (WMBB) – The Bay County Parks and Recreation Department has found a solution to quickly maintain its sports facilities.

It used to take staff days to paint all five fields of the sports complex, but now field painting can be completed in less than an hour.

“It means straighter lines, we take out human error,” said division manager Travis Barbee.

Before each football or soccer season, the parks and recreation department would prepare by lining and painting their fields.

“Last year it took ten people a full ten hour day,” Barbee said.

He said workers walked for miles stretching tape measures to mark the field before applying a new coat of paint. But now there is a new system called “Turf Tank”.

It helps save labor time and gives employees more time to make other field improvements.

“We’ll probably mow at least 10 or 20 more acres a week, or clean more bathrooms, or pick up more trash,” Barbee said. “Even when you’re not on a sports field, you still feel the effects of this robot.”

And in about 36 minutes, the robot painted an entire soccer field, all with straight lines.

“We lease it for $10,000 plus a $2,000 paint fee,” Barbee said. “It holds two and a half gallons of paint, so that’s all we really need to check or make sure the paint isn’t running out and the battery isn’t dead.”

This rolling color machine can also create special logos that can be displayed in the center of the field.

So far, Bay County only has one of these painting robots. But after this season, they will look at the cost and efficiency of leasing a second painting robot.
