At the assisted living facility at Sterling Estates in Cobb County, you’ll see trees, flowers, and beautiful scenery lining the walls.

They are all the work of Bobbi Kanner, one of the facility’s residents.

Kanner has overcome multiple sclerosis, a car accident, and personal tragedy.

They all led to her love for painting and now she shares it with as many people as possible.

“I think as a child I always liked to scribble or draw,” says Kanner.

She grew up in New York, where she first discovered her love for art, but life took her in other directions.

She then moved to Sterling Estates following the death of her husband in 2006.

“I didn’t paint until I came here,” she says.

Kanner suffered setbacks – she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and suffered a right side injury after a car accident.

“In the last six months I’ve noticed that I can’t use my hand, I can’t hold the pencil, I can’t get dressed. I can’t use that right hand God, he gave me my left hand to paint,” says Kanner.

Now she is using her art to express her emotions.

“Usually it is when I wake up in the morning and just don’t feel happy or energetic or why I’m here. I would go under and be allowed to paint, ”she says.

Her rediscovered passion has been greatly supported by her children and grandchildren and the staff at Sterling Estates, where she displays her paintings everywhere.

“I’m looking at it now and I think wow, did I really do that?” She says.

Kanner says she hopes her images inspire others and how to overcome anything.

“I’m proud of myself and of everything else, no matter what your situation is, no matter how life turns out, there is always a reason to get up in the morning.”
