Davidson, North Carolina – Judith Kay Hankins Ellison, 77, died with her family of heart and kidney failure on December 3, 2021, at home on Lake Norman in Davidson, NC. Judy was born in Jacksonville, FL and was the eldest child of the late Julius Elias Hankins Jr. and Dorothy Davis Hankins of Charlotte, NC. She died in 1987 from her brother Gary Spencer Hankins. She leaves behind her 56-year-old husband Charles Gary Ellison; Son Brandon Derek (Samantha) Ellison of Rock Hill, SC with expected grandchild; Brother JE “Chip” (Marsha) Hankins III of Fort Collins, CO; Brother David Scott Hankins of Atlanta, GA; and, nieces Maggi (Nate) Brown, Mallory Hankins and Emma Hankins.
Judy’s family meetinghouse was Ascension Lutheran in Charlotte. She graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1962 and Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1966 with a BA cum laude in English and Spanish as majors.
Judy’s decade-long teaching career began in 1966 at Loudoun County High School in Virginia, then moved to Watauga High School in Boone, NC, and ended at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas, Virginia. After graduation, her longstanding interest in art and painting came to the fore when she exhibited and sold her own paintings and became the co-owner of two art galleries: Stage Door Gallery at the Hayloft Dinner Theater in Manassas and Stage Door II in Alexandria, Virginia. She loved interacting with artists in the area and beyond.
Over the years Judy has enjoyed theater and trips to Europe, Spain, Mexico, and the United States. When she retired with husband Gary, their Lake Norman apartment was a special joy. She loved the view, the water, the casual life, and the boating.
A celebration of life for Judy will take place sometime in the new year. In addition to flowers, the family particularly appreciates the hospice and palliative care at Lake Norman, 705 Griffith St., Suite 203, Davidson, NC 28036. Express your condolences online at www.jamesfuneralhomelkn.com
