KC woman organizes sunflower art auction for the benefit of Ukraine

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A local woman, moved by Ukraine’s ongoing crisis, founded Sunflowers for Ukraine, an art auction that benefits the people there.

The organizer of the art auction is Holly Ann Schenk.

She says she feels called to help because of her connection there.

“I came into contact with a wonderful young journalist who was here through Global Tie (Global Ties KC) and we’ve stayed in touch over the years,” said Ann Schenk. “And when the war broke out, I felt so helpless. What can I do? “

As an artist, she said it was a no-brainer, an art utility. And the theme is sunflowers.

“Sunflowers are the national flower of Ukraine,” said Schenk. “I asked as many artists as I could find if they could donate a piece to Sunflower Art, which we’re auctioning off and the money going to the people as directly as possible.”

All sales and donations benefit the Kyiv Rotary Refugee Initiative, which provides humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians.

According to Schenk, artists from across the country have donated more than 90 artworks for the auction.

The call for entries is now open and can be viewed online until August 4thth.

Schenk says the art auction will take place on August 5thth at the Meadowbrook Cub House in Prairie Village.
