Carolyn Benedict-Drew, Art Center Sarasota Board Chair, recently announced that the organization has welcomed acclaimed photographer Barbara Banks to its Board of Directors.

“Barbara has long been an important part of the artistic and cultural landscape of Sarasota’s wealthy,” says Benedict-Drew. “Her commercial work appears regularly in local magazines and her fine art photography has been featured both regionally and nationally.

Banks picked up her first camera as a child and used black and white film to document family activities and their world. She was inspired by her parents, her high school art teacher, and many artists, including photographers Arbus, Cartier-Bresson, and Steichen. Banks is about curiosity about our world – tiny, expansive, intimate, breathtaking, somber, illusory, provocative, ephemeral. She explores our environment – human, natural, constructed. While her focus is on editorial commissions and environmental portraiture, Banks is also in demand for her beauty and fashion photography.

Banks operates a commercial photography shop in downtown Sarasota and is commissioned by clients in Florida and the United States. Her permanent installation, WORKER, was commissioned by the Sarasota Art Museum and is a site-specific installation of portrait photos from the lenders’ talent for redesigning Sarasota High School’s historic building. The imagery celebrates a class of people who often remain invisible. “Workers” wants to make the invisible visible, to give a face to the work that the museum has produced.

Filmmaker KT Curran has described Banks as a photographer with “an amazing and intuitive ability to get to the essence of her subject to capture stunning photos with depth and vision. Her commercial and artistic work is unparalleled, and a photograph of Barbara Banks will never fail to impress and amaze.”

Banks is currently represented by the State of the Arts Gallery in Sarasota. Visit www.barbarabanks.com for more information.

“Barbara is an excellent addition to our company,” said Kinsey Robb, executive director of ACS. “As a leader in the art world, her invaluable perspective and dedication to the creative arts community will fuel our forward motion and strengthen our mission. We couldn’t be happier.”

The Board of Directors of the Art Center Sarasota includes Carolyn Benedict-Drew, Chair; Michael J. Shelton, Vice Chairman; Phil Baker, Treasurer; Howard Davis, Secretary; and Barbara Banks, Ramsey Frangie and Ned Norris.
