Kochi-based artist Sunil Linus De explores the complex relationship between humans and nature in his art exhibition Survival of the Fittest, on view at Durbar Hall Art Gallery. Around 80 paintings by the artist are on display.

The artist captures the beauty of everyday life in the detailed watercolor paintings. Watercolor is a difficult medium to work with as it does not allow for reworking or overpainting the space. The artist’s many years of experience are reflected in his effortless handling of the medium, the works convey the lightness and transparency typical of watercolors.

Typical Kerala sights – boats on the backwaters, people on the streets and on the land – are complemented by works of animals in the forests such as elephants, deer and others. The landscapes are awe-inspiring: “A landscape should be more than just a pretty picture, it should draw the viewer into visiting that place, sit under the shade of that tree… it should draw the viewer in. As an artist, you should be able to give the viewer of the painting a ‘feel’ of the landscape.” Although he also works in other media, he admits that he prefers watercolors.

“It’s not an easy medium to manipulate, you need years of experience to keep its transparency. For the past 30 years as an artist I have experimented with watercolors to achieve the results I make.”

The dimensions of the works range from 11×15 inches to 30×20 inches; They are on sale with prices starting at 10000-2 lakh. The exhibition, which is his 11th, was scheduled to take place in 2020.

Ends November 6th.
