Shrey Purohit, a US citizen born in Mumbai, is one of the young artists who received the prestigious award for best artist under 30 from the PleinAir Salon Art Competition for his painting of the urban landscape of San Francisco. He recently auctioned and donated his award-winning oil painting, Downtown Near the Van Gogh Exhibit, to a well-known and historic nonprofit called the Coalition of Homelessness to raise funds for the homeless and needy in San Francisco.

Indian dyslexic Shrey Purohit’s art auction brings in $ 2,500 for those in need

According to Mid-Day, the auction raised $ 65,000 with the help of 150 works of art by artists, of which Shrey Painting went up to $ 2,500 to the highest bidder in a bidding war. It was also revealed that after being diagnosed with dyslexia, Purohit found the academics to be a barrier, decided to explore the world of art, and started doing graffiti and typography. He switched from graphic design to study as an illustrator and graduated from California College of the Arts in San Francisco with a Bachelor of Fine Arts during the 2020 pandemic.

When Shrey Purohit watched galleries close due to the pandemic, he decided to open his own instead of waiting for the right opportunity. “When I saw galleries close left, right and center, I decided to start my own gallery instead of waiting for an opportunity [The Ingleside Gallery] to bring out my great friends and myself as creators with a new hope, “he said loudly Mid-Day.

The Ingleside Gallery displays and highlights the artwork of budding artists who are unable to display their work in commercial galleries in downtown San Francisco. Through this approach, Shrey managed to break the barrier between artists and art lovers and has now exhibited over 500 works of art and sold over $ 15,000 worth of art in the first 3 months after the gallery opened.

Best known for recreating the scenic beauty of San Francisco Bay, Purohit won the 2021 Downtown Near the Van Gogh Exhibit and two 2020 PleinAir Salon Art Competition Awards, one for 800 Indiana St Nocturne. For him, art means: “Through my artistic practice, I observe, survey and interpret my neighborhood attentively before I create paintings that document the delicate interplay of light and shadow. My images are a means of conveying hope that reflect the community and comfort in the neighborhood, “says Mid-Day.
